Stop! Don't Stick Your Hand Down There

Every year, thousands of homeowners end up in the emergency room trying to fish a dropped spoon or a piece of glass out of a jammed garbage disposal. Even if the switch is off, residual tension in the motor can cause the blades to snap forward unexpectedly when a jam is cleared.

Additionally, most disposals are hardwired directly into your home's electrical grid. If your unit is leaking water from the bottom, that water is dripping directly through the high-voltage motor housing. This creates a severe electrocution hazard under your sink.

Let the professionals handle it safely. Triad Plumbing knows exactly how to safely lock out the power, manually un-bind frozen flywheels, and properly seal new units to your sink basin to guarantee zero leaks.

Garbage Disposal FAQs

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?

A humming disposal means the motor is receiving electricity, but the internal flywheel is physically jammed by a hard object (like a bone, glass, or silverware). Turn the switch off immediately. Leaving it humming will overheat and permanently burn out the motor. It requires manual clearing with a specialized wrench and a hard reset.

Why is water leaking from the bottom of the disposal?

If water is dripping from the physical bottom casing of the disposal (where the motor sits), the internal watertight seals have ruptured. This cannot be repaired safely because water is now mixing with the electrical components. The entire unit must be replaced.

Are there things I shouldn't put down my disposal?

Absolutely. Never put coffee grounds, eggshells, potato peels, grease, or expandable foods (like pasta or rice) down the disposal. They turn into a thick paste that will easily bypass the blades and completely clog your kitchen sink drain pipe.
