Why is My Water Heater Making a Popping Noise?

If your water heater sounds like a percolating coffee pot or popcorn popping in the other room, don't panic. The culprit is almost certainly mineral sediment buildup. Here is the factual breakdown of what is happening inside your tank:

The Cause

Areas with hard water (like El Paso) have high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals separate from the heated water and settle at the very bottom of your tank, forming a thick, sandy layer of sediment.

The Reaction

Your water heater's gas burner or electric heating element is located at the bottom of the tank. As the tank heats up, that heat is transferred directly into the layer of mineral sediment first.

The Noise

Small pockets of water get trapped underneath and within this crusty mineral layer. As the heater runs, the trapped water rapidly boils and turns into steam. Those steam bubbles have to force their way through the heavy sediment layer to escape to the top of the tank. The popping, rumbling, or crackling noises you hear are those steam bubbles violently bursting through the mineral buildup.

The Solution

While a popping water heater isn't an immediate emergency, it does force your unit to work harder, which wastes energy and can eventually overheat the tank bottom.

To stop the noise, you need to clear the sediment. You can do this by flushing your water heater. Turning off the heat source, attaching a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom, and thoroughly draining the tank will wash out the trapped minerals. In areas with severe hard water, flushing the tank once a year or installing a whole-home water softener will keep the popping noises from returning.
